Captain: Diego Vilar

CAPTAIN DIEGO VILAR

Diego was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He moved with his family to Sydney, Australia as a youngster. He attended school in Sydney and opened his own business following graduation. His business success in Australia continued in the USA. After many lucrative years behind a desk, his adventurous spirit got the best of him. He folded away his suit and tie, packed a bag, and embarked on a journey around the world. His travels over oceans and across continents has taken 13 years, so far. In addition to his native Spanish and English, he has mastered enough Italian and German to enthusiastically converse in those languages as well.

Diego’s love of the ocean goes back to his days growing up in Sydney, Australia, where he bought his first boat at the age of 23. Even before sailing thousands of miles, he was captivated by the ocean, sailing, diving and exploring. He has sailed all over the world, from Greece to Florida and Mexico through the Panama Canal. But, when he sailed into the Virgin Islands, he felt he'd come ashore in paradise. Enchanted by the Caribbean, Diego is happy to take a hiatus from his travels. He is also very pleased to have a dream job as Captain aboard beautiful, sailing yacht ODYSSEUS.

Diego has been PADI certified since 1994 and is a Dive Master. His knowledge of the world, the ocean and marine life is extensive. Guests who are interested will discover a patient instructor and eloquent raconteur. He knows great places to enjoy above and beneath the sea. He fills each, individual itinerary with highlights; expansive beaches, stunning reefs, cool beach bars, or just places to pull up a hammock between two coco palms and chill. He looks forward to sharing his favorite experiences with his guests, and igniting within them the same passion he feels for the sea.

CHEF VALARIE HUGHES

Val was born and raised in St, Petersburg, Florida. Her playground was the beautiful beach on the Gulf of Mexico. She had a loving family that included five brothers and a sister. Growing up in such a large household instilled a strong sense of responsibility, caring and compassion. Aboard ODYSSEUS, taking wonderful care of her guests and anticipating their needs just comes naturally.

Val has always enjoyed positions that allowed her to communicate with people. She has the warmth and sensitivity that puts guests immediately at ease. When it comes to dining, her “down home good southern comfort type style cooking” is highly praised. Guests say it's like enjoying Sunday dinner every day! Val, is also a Dive Master. She has always loved the sea and sharing her underwater knowledge with her guests. And with a little prodding, she’ll share a family recipe or two as well.
