Crew Information
Captain
Captain: Jean-Claude Schubel
Captain Jean Claude, or JC, as he is fondly known, hails from Canada and has recently been appointed Captain on S/Y Amerigo.
After graduating from ISFATES (France and Germany) with a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1996, JC went on to obtain a Masters Degree in Industrial Engineering from Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal in 1998. His first employment position was Procurement and Sourcing Manager at Canadian Pacific Railways, and he later worked in the Communications Industry with Senior Management positions for Nortel and Novatel Wireless dealing with clients in US, Canada, Asia and Europe.
Being an outdoor person JC was an active and dedicated member for twelve years as Assistant Patrol Leader with the Canadian Ski Patrol, and also a Member of the Olympic Medical Team, World Cup downhill Ski racing at Lake Louise and Whistler, where his advanced skills in First Aid, CPR and AED proved to be very useful.
However in 2014, JC felt it was time for a career change to a life at sea, and that was certainly a busy and productive year. First, he obtained the PADI advanced diver certification (with deep, drift, navigation, wreck & night specialties), followed by the American Sailing Association (ASA) 101, 103, 104 and 105 certificates, culminating with his Master of Yacht 200 tons Commercial Offshore Sailing License from the Maritime Institute in San Diego, California.
Since then JC has completed two Atlantic crossings one being from Gibraltar to Uruguay, and has worked as Skipper on charter yachts in and around the San Diego Bay, Mission Bay and up to Newport Beach in California on a wide range of sailing yachts and catamarans.
JC joined S/Y Amerigo as Captain in January 2016 and has since enjoyed participating in the annual St Maarten and St Barths Caribbean sailing regattas. Hes recently sailed Amerigo from the Caribbean, via Bermuda, to New England and enjoyed cruising from Nantucket to Montauk. JC also managed to find time to race in the NYYC regatta on an RP 60'.
Whilst JC is obviously fairly new to sailing, hes taken to this yacht charter life like a duck to water having dedicated the last 3 years to his new passion.
JC has a vast amount of technical skill and geographical knowledge, due to his extensive travels on land and sea, and he is meticulous about safety so always makes his charter guests feel safe, secure, comfortable and relaxed.
You will find JC an energetic, enthusiastic and intellectual captain who truly enjoys sharing sailing techniques with both novice and experienced charter guests. Your time on board S/Y Amerigo with Captain JC will provide a great sailing experience with many great memories.
